Boston Stadium (Gillette Stadium) History
The Gillette Stadium opened in 2002, and is the home of NFL team New England Patriots, as well as MLS side New England Revolution. The stadium is located 22 miles southwest of Downtown Boston, and was built to replace Foxboro Stadium. It also served as the home of the University of Massachusetts Minutemen football team in 2012 and 2013.
The first official event at the stadium was an MLS soccer game in May 2002, which saw New England Revolution defeat Dallas Burn 2-0. The Patriots unveiled their Super Bowl XXXVI championship banner ahead of a match against the Pittsburgh Steelers in September 2002, and the first band to play at the Gillette Stadium were Jeremiah Freed in June 2002. Originally, the stadium was known as CMGI Field, before Gillette purchased naming rights, and in 2010, Gillette announced that this name will be in place until 2031.
What is the Boston Stadium like?
A famous feature that the Gillette Stadium is renowned for is its 22-story lighthouse, which is the tallest lighthouse in the country and provides panoramic views of Boston and Providence skylines. The Kraft family invested $250 million to upgrade the stadium, which included the lighthouse, as well as the addition of the largest outdoor curved-radius videoboard in the country at a sports venue.
The stadium has three tiers of seating on both sides of the field, with just one tier behind both endzones, which makes for a unique looking venue from both the inside and outside. The Gillette Stadium does not have a roof, adding to its uniqueness, and from the outside, its lighthouse and glass exterior catch the eye first.
