Mexico City Stadium (Estadio Azteca) History
Estadio Azteca opened in 1966, and is regarded as one of the most famous stadiums in the world. It is the official home of the Club America soccer team, as well as the Mexico men’s national soccer team. It is the largest stadium in Latin America, and has hosted two World Cup finals; in 1970 and 1986.
It also hosted the 1986 World Cup quarter-final match between Argentina and England, which featured the infamous ‘Hand of God’ goal from Diego Maradona. By being used at the 2026 World Cup, Estadio Azteca is the only stadium to host three editions of the World Cup.
What is the Mexico City Stadium like?
Estadio Azteca is renowned for having one of the most electrifying and intense atmospheres for soccer games, largely thanks to being the eighth-largest association soccer stadium in the world. It has a rich history of classic games being played in the stadium. For the 2026 World Cup, the stadium has added a new hybrid pitch, refurbished seating, new LED video screens, and more.
From the outside, it looks like a classic soccer stadium, with mini pillars connected to the upper stands all around the stadium, and a metallic colored roof and exterior, providing shade for seated fans.
