Philadelphia Stadium (Lincoln Financial Field) History
Lincoln Financial Field is the home of NFL side Philadelphia Eagles, as well as the Temp Owls football team. It is also the former home of MLS side Philadelphia Union, who are now based at Subaru Park. First opened in 2003, the stadium was built to replace the Veterans Stadium. Since opening, Lincoln Financial Field has also hosted five lacrosse national championships, as well as the Army-Navy football game.
The city of Philadelphia and Commonwealth of Pennsylvania contributed $188 million in public funding to the stadium construction, with the stadium’s naming rights sold for a huge $139.6 million to the Lincoln Financial Group in 2002.
What is the Philadelphia Stadium like?
Lincoln Financial Field has three open corners within the venue, offering fans and supporters views of the Philadelphia skyline. The stadium design is meant to evoke an eagle, with large canopy stands on the east and west stands, and an eagle’s nest balcony behind the north end-zone. A wide range of upgrades to the stadium were announced in 2013, totaling an investment of $125 million.
Key features include seating expansions, two connecting bridges for upper levels, and two new HD video boards. From the outside, the stadium honors the historic brick architecture throughout Philadelphia by using a brick-like design, while the venue’s steel structure makes reference to Philadelphia’s famous bridges.
