Guadalajara Stadium (Estadio Akron) History

Estadio Akron opened in 2010, and is the home of Liga MX soccer team, C.D. Guadalajara. The stadium has hosted Copa Libertadores matches in the past, as well as both the opening and closing ceremony of the 2011 Pan American Games. Estadio Akron is located in Zapopan, in the Mexican state of Jalisco.

In 2004, it was announced that C.D. Guadalajara would construct a new stadium of its own, in their intention to leave Estadio Jalisco. Construction for the new venue didn’t begin until 2007, and was finished in 2010. In one of the stadium’s first events, C.D. Guadalajara hosted Manchester United in a friendly game, which Guadalajara won 3-2.

What is the Guadalajara Stadium like?

With Estadio Akron being just over 15 years old, it’s one of the most modern stadiums in the world. It looks unique, and is perched on top of a grass-covered hill, with the seating bowl below ground level. Local fans refer to the venue as ‘The Volcano’.

The exterior of the stadium makes for excellent viewing, walking up the grassy slopes before descending into your set once inside the venue. The stadium has a white roof covering all four stands, and two tiers of seating wrapping around the whole field, with an LED screen at both ends behind the goal.
