How to Bet on NFL Games
NFL betting gives you several ways to wager on each matchup. Instead of simply picking which team will win, bettors can choose from NFL spreads, moneylines, totals, props and other markets.
Some of the most popular types of NFL bets include:
- Point Spread: The favorite must win by more than the listed spread for a bet on that team to cover, while the underdog can cover by winning outright or losing by fewer points than the spread.
- Moneyline: Bet on which team will win the game outright, regardless of the final margin.
- Over/Under: Also known as the total, this market lets you bet on whether the combined score will finish over or under a number set by the sportsbook.
- Player Props: Wager on individual player outcomes, such as passing yards, rushing yards, receptions or touchdowns.
- NFL Futures: Place longer-term wagers on outcomes such as the Super Bowl winner, conference champions or division winners.
How to Read NFL Odds
NFL betting odds are generally displayed in American odds format. Positive odds indicate how much profit a $100 winning wager would return, while negative odds indicate how much would need to be wagered to make $100 in profit.
For example, a team priced at +150 on the moneyline would return $150 in profit on a winning $100 wager. A favorite priced at -150 would require a $150 wager to return $100 in profit.
NFL Point Spread Betting
The point spread is one of the most popular NFL betting markets. Sportsbooks use the spread to create a handicap between the two teams rather than requiring bettors to simply choose the outright winner.
If a team is listed as a 3.5-point favorite (-3.5), it needs to win by at least four points to cover the spread. A bet on the 3.5-point underdog (+3.5) would win if that team wins the game outright or loses by three points or fewer.
NFL Moneyline Betting
NFL moneyline bets are wagers on the outright winner of a game. Favorites typically have negative moneyline odds, while underdogs generally have positive odds.
Because there is no point spread to cover, the only result that matters for a standard moneyline wager is which team wins the game.
NFL Over/Under Betting
NFL totals betting focuses on how many points the two teams will score combined.
If the over/under is set at 47.5 points, an Over bet wins if the teams combine for 48 or more points, while an Under bet wins if they combine for 47 points or fewer.
NFL Futures Odds
NFL futures allow bettors to wager on outcomes that will be determined later in the season. Popular NFL futures markets can include Super Bowl odds, conference winner odds, division winner odds and season-long player awards.
Futures odds can move significantly throughout the year based on team performance, injuries, standings and playoff positioning. Check Fanatics Sportsbook throughout the season for the latest NFL futures odds and betting markets.
