Josh Allen, Buffalo Bills
Josh Allen won MVP in 2024, beating Lamar Jackson 27 to 22 in first-place votes. He followed it with another elite 2025 season, totaling 4,247 yards and 39 touchdowns. He was the only player in the league with 3,000 passing yards and 500 rushing yards.
His 2026 start has been historic. Through two weeks, Allen has nine total touchdowns and no turnovers, including a five-touchdown game in a 41-31 win over the Lions. The only other players to open a season that way in the Super Bowl era are Patrick Mahomes in 2018 and Peyton Manning in 2013, and both won MVP.
Allen’s rushing touchdowns give him a scoring floor few quarterbacks can match, and he has pulled clear as the MVP favorite. The biggest threat to his case is voter fatigue, since voters often favor a fresh storyline over a recent winner.
Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs
Patrick Mahomes is a two-time MVP, winning in 2018 and 2022. He returned from an ACL injury to open 2026 and has climbed back to second on the MVP board.
His odds drifted after Week 1 before shortening sharply as he works back to full form. He is also a leading Comeback Player of the Year contender, and a healthy Mahomes on a winning Chiefs team is always a serious MVP threat.
Brock Purdy, San Francisco 49ers
Brock Purdy has been the biggest riser in the MVP market. He has five passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown through two games, with wins over the Rams and Dolphins.
He went 20 of 22 in the Week 2 win over Miami. The opening win over the Rams, the preseason Super Bowl favorite, gives him a signature result voters will remember if San Francisco stays near the top of the NFC.
Joe Burrow, Cincinnati Bengals
Turf toe cost Joe Burrow half of the 2025 season, setting up a bounce-back case for 2026. The Bengals are off to a 2-0 start, including a win over the Texans in which Burrow threw two touchdown passes.
His yardage has been modest so far, but winning drives MVP voting. If Cincinnati contends for the top of the AFC, Burrow’s track record as one of the league’s most productive passers makes him a natural candidate.
Lamar Jackson, Baltimore Ravens
Lamar Jackson is a two-time MVP, winning in 2019 and 2023. His 2019 award was unanimous, with all 50 first-place votes, making him one of only two players ever to sweep the ballot, alongside Tom Brady in 2010.
He earned back-to-back First-Team All-Pro honors in 2023 and 2024 before a down 2025 season. Baltimore has surrounded him with offensive talent, and he opened 2026 by leading a lopsided win over the Colts.
When healthy, Jackson’s combination of rushing and passing production puts him in the MVP conversation every season. Staying on the field for all 17 games is the key variable.
Dak Prescott, Dallas Cowboys
Dak Prescott was lights out in Week 2, throwing four touchdown passes and completing 83.9% of his passes in a win over Washington.
Prescott finished runner-up in MVP voting in 2023. If Dallas turns its early form into a division title, his passing volume gives him a real path back into the race.
Trevor Lawrence, Jacksonville Jaguars
Trevor Lawrence was an MVP finalist for the first time in 2025 after a sizzling second half. He finished fifth in the voting.
He opened 2026 by completing 18 of 23 passes for 245 yards and four touchdowns in a 34-10 rout of the Browns. The Jaguars have won nine of their last 10 games with Lawrence throwing 26 touchdowns and seven interceptions over that stretch.
Matthew Stafford, Los Angeles Rams
Matthew Stafford won the 2025 MVP in one of the closest votes in the award’s history. The Rams dropped their opener to the 49ers, and his odds have lengthened since.
No player has won back-to-back MVPs since Aaron Rodgers in 2020 and 2021. Stafford would need to overcome voter fatigue and a crowded field of contenders.
Drake Maye, New England Patriots
Drake Maye finished runner-up in the 2025 MVP vote, losing to Matthew Stafford by one first-place vote (24 to 23) and five total points. His 2025 completion percentage broke Tom Brady’s franchise record.
His 2026 case took a major hit in the opener at Seattle, where he completed 23 of 40 passes for 178 yards and turned the ball over three times. With a first-place schedule ahead, he needs a strong run to climb back into contention.
Jalen Hurts, Philadelphia Eagles
Jalen Hurts finished runner-up in MVP voting in 2022. Philadelphia’s offense faded in the second half of 2025, but Hurts gets a fresh start in 2026 with new offensive coordinator Sean Mannion and a revamped receiving corps.
If the Eagles’ offense rebounds and the team stays near the top of the NFC, his dual-threat production makes him a credible longshot
