NHL betting gives you several ways to wager on each game. Instead of simply picking which team will win, bettors can choose from NHL puck lines, moneylines, totals, props, and other markets.

Some of the most popular types of NHL bets include:

Puck Line: The favorite must win by more than the listed puck line, typically 1.5 goals, for a bet on that team to cover. The underdog can cover by winning outright or losing by fewer goals than the puck line.
Moneyline: Bet on which team will win the game outright, regardless of the final margin.
Over/Under: Also known as the total, this market lets you bet on whether the combined number of goals scored will finish over or under a number set by the sportsbook.

How to Read NHL Odds

NHL betting odds are generally displayed in American odds format. Positive odds indicate how much profit a $100 winning wager would return, while negative odds indicate how much would need to be wagered to make $100 in profit.

For example, a team priced at +150 on the moneyline would return $150 in profit on a winning $100 wager. A favorite priced at -150 would require a $150 wager to return $100 in profit.

NHL Puck Line Betting

The puck line is one of the most popular NHL betting markets. Sportsbooks use the puck line to create a handicap between the two teams, rather than requiring bettors to simply choose the outright winner.

If a team is listed as a 1.5-point favorite (-1.5), it needs to win by at least 2 points to cover the puck line. A bet on the 1.5-point underdog (+1.5) would win if that team wins the game outright or loses by just 1 point.

NHL Moneyline Betting

NHL moneyline bets are wagers on the outright winner of a game. Favorites typically have negative moneyline odds, while underdogs generally have positive odds.

Because there is no point spread to cover, the only result that matters for a standard moneyline wager is which team wins the game.

NHL Over/Under Betting

NHL totals betting focuses on how many points the two teams will score combined.

If the over/under is set at 5.5 points, an Over bet wins if the teams combine for 6 or more points, while an Under bet wins if they combine for 5 points or fewer.

NHL Futures Odds

NHL futures allow bettors to wager on outcomes that will be decided later in the season. Popular NHL futures markets include Stanley Cup odds, NHL conference winner odds, NHL division winner odds, Presidents' Trophy odds, and season point totals.
