How to Bet on NBA Games

How to Read NBA Odds

NBA betting odds are generally displayed in American odds format. Positive odds indicate how much profit a $100 winning wager would return, while negative odds indicate how much would need to be wagered to make $100 in profit.

For example, a team priced at +150 on the moneyline would return $150 in profit on a winning $100 wager. A favorite priced at -150 would require a $150 wager to return $100 in profit.

NBA Point Spread Betting

The point spread is one of the most popular NBA betting markets. Sportsbooks use the spread to create a handicap between the two teams rather than requiring bettors to simply choose the outright winner.

If a team is listed as a 20.5-point favorite (-20.5), it needs to win by at least 21 points to cover the spread. A bet on the 20.5-point underdog (+20.5) would win if that team wins the game outright or loses by 20 points or fewer.

NBA Moneyline Betting

NBA moneyline bets are wagers on the outright winner of a game. Favorites typically have negative moneyline odds, while underdogs generally have positive odds.

Because there is no point spread to cover, the only result that matters for a standard moneyline wager is which team wins the game.

NBA Over/Under Betting

NBA totals betting focuses on how many points the two teams will score combined.

If the over/under is set at 200.5 points, an Over bet wins if the teams combine for 201 or more points, while an Under bet wins if they combine for 200 points or fewer.

NBA futures allow bettors to wager on outcomes that will be determined later in the season. Popular NBA futures markets include NBA Championship odds, Conference winner odds, Division winner odds, regular-season awards, and season win totals.
