Houston Stadium (NRG Stadium) History

NRG Stadium is the home of NFL side Houston Texans, and has hosted two Super Bowls since 2004, as well as several USA men’s national team soccer matches and Mexico national team soccer friendlies. The Texas Bowl and Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo also take place at the NRG Stadium, which has also hosted WrestleMania 25 and the 2024 College Football Playoff National Championship in the past.

The stadium was previously known as Reliant Stadium, with its construction finished in 2002 at a cost of $352 million. NRG Stadium was the first venue in the NFL to have a retractable roof, a feature that has grown in popularity in recent years.

What is the Houston Stadium like?

The NRG Stadium is steep inside, which adds to the atmosphere and intensity of sporting events at the venue, especially when the roof is closed. The stadium has three tiers of seating all around the field, with alternative navy blue and red seats from the top tier to the bottom tier. Its retractable roof is an impressive feature that catches the eye when inside, it can open or close in a matter of minutes and allows for a wide range of events and fixtures all year round.

From the outside, you’d be forgiven if you mistook the NRG Stadium as a large office building or similar, particularly when the roof is closed. It has a white exterior with glass windows wrapped around, and four pillar like blocks, one on each corner of the stadium.
