Miami Stadium (Hard Rock Stadium) History
Hard Rock Stadium was built in 1987, and has hosted several major events over the past 38 years. The stadium has housed six Super Bowls, two World Series, the Copa America final, and Wrestlemania XXVIII, among other showpiece events. The stadium is the home of NFL side Miami Dolphins, as well as Miami Hurricanes, the University of Miami’s NCAA Division 1 college team.
Since opening in 1987, the venue has been known by a range of names in the past, including Joe Robbie Stadium, Pro Player Park, Pro Player Stadium, Dolphins Stadium, Land Shark Stadium, and Sun Life Stadium. The venue was renamed the Hard Rock Stadium in 2016, in a deal that runs until 2034. Additional events held at the stadium include MLB, Orange Bowl, Miami Open tennis, F1’s Miami Grand Prix, and more.
What is the Miami Stadium like?
Hard Rock Stadium is a multi-purpose venue, with its design reflecting Miami’s culture and energy. The most notable feature of the stadium is its canopy roof, which stretches to cover over 90% of the seating areas. It also has a big focus on sustainability, and is equipped with a wide range of energy efficient resources, including solar panels.
From the outside, the venue has a square white roof with pointed edges, unlike a traditional rounded roof that the majority of sporting stadiums and arenas offer. It’s located just off the Florida Turnpike, providing easy access for sporting fans attending events at the stadium.
