New York Stadium (MetLife Stadium) History

MetLife Stadium opened in 2010, and is the home of two NFL teams; New York Giants and New York Jets. The stadium is located five miles west of New York City, and was built to replace Giants Stadium, which was becoming one of the oldest NFL stadiums after almost 30 years. At the time of its completion, it was the most expensive stadium built in the USA, at an approximate cost of $1.6 billion.

MetLife Stadium hosted several 2025 Club World Cup soccer matches, including the final between PSG and Chelsea, as well as the Super Bowl in 2014. MetLife Stadium is the fifth venue in the New York area to be home to multiple teams from the same sports league, also including the Polo Grounds (home to baseball Giants and Yankees).

What is the New York Stadium like?

With the MetLife Stadium being a shared home of two NFL teams, its colors are kept neutral, to balance each team’s identity. The design is inspired by Manhattan skyscrapers, which gives the stadium a vertical presence. All around the stadium are horizontal aluminum louvers that can be lit in different colors to help the stadium branding on gamedays.

Inside, the seats are a mixture of dark blue and grey, in an attempt to stay neutral between the two NFL team’s colors. There is no roof on the MetLife Stadium, with HD screens in all four corners of the stadium. There are also three tiers of seating stretching all the way around the interior, making for a classic NFL and soccer stadium feel.
