San Francisco Stadium (Levi's Stadium) History

Levi’s Stadium opened in 2014, and has been the home of NFL team San Francisco 49ers since then. The stadium has hosted two Super Bowls, in 2016 and earlier this year in 2026, as well as the 2019 College Football Playoff National Championship. It is located 40 miles south of San Francisco.

The venue has also hosted WrestleMania 31, as well as the Pac-12 Football Championship Game from 2014 to 2019. The record attendance at Levi’s Stadium was for an Ed Sheeran concert in September 2023, which saw over 80,000 people in attendance.

What is the San Francisco Stadium like?

Levi’s Stadium was designed with a focus on being a multi-purpose venue, with fan experience as a top priority. The stadium does not have a roof, and its seating design places two-thirds of all total fans in its lower bowl section, which is one of the largest lower bowls in the NFL. Another interesting feature is its rooftop farm, which was built in 2016, where 6,500 square feet of roof was turned into an organically maintained rooftop farm.

From the outside, one of the corners of the stadium offers no seating, and a clear view to the main stand on the opposite side of the field. Approaching the main entrance, you’ll see a flat white wall with glass windows and 49ers branding, while from behind the main stand, you’ll see the underside of the seating.
