Toronto Stadium (BMO Field) History
BMO Field opened in 2007, and is the home of MLS team Toronto FC, as well as Canadian Football League side Toronto Argonauts. When built, BMO Field was a soccer-specific stadium for the 2007 Under 20 World Cup. Since then, it has also hosted the finals of the MLS Cup in 2016 and 2017, as well as Canada men’s national soccer team matches, and rugby fixtures. BMO Field is located at Exhibition Place in Toronto.
The stadium underwent a series of developments between 2014 to 2016, adding an upper deck to the east grandstand and a roof over seating areas. It also lengthened the field to make the venue suitable for Canadian football games. BMO Field is the fifth stadium to be built at its exact location at Exhibition Place.
What is the Toronto Stadium like?
The exterior of BMO Field uses a mixture of steel framing, concrete, and glass to give it a contemporary look. The stadium design means that you can see areas of the stands from the outside. The two stands either side of the field each have two tiers of seating, with less seating behind each goal.
A brand new feature of the stadium for the 2026 World Cup is the rooftop patio and lounge, which was added after BMO Field was selected to host matches for the tournament. Other new additions include LED videoboards and a brand new sound system, helping increase the noise within the stadium on gamedays.
