Vancouver Stadium (BC Place) History
BC Place is the home of MLS side Vancouver Whitecaps, as well as Canadian Football League team BC Lions, and the annual Canada Sevens tournament (rugby). Opened in 1983, the stadium was the main venue for the 2010 Olympic Games and 2010 Paralympics, and it hosted several matches for the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup. BC Place is located on the north side of False Creek, and has also hosted Canada men’s soccer national team matches in the past.
Following the 2010 Olympics, BC Place was closed for 16 months and revitalized, which included replacing its inflatable roof with a state of the art retractable roof, which was the largest of its kind. It also featured the addition of the second biggest center-hung scoreboard in North America.
What is the Vancouver Stadium like?
BC Place is very distinguishable from the outside, with its spear-like features pointing upwards dotted all around the stadium, and a bright white roof covering the entire stadium. The stadium becomes even more recognizable for night time events, with the roof having the ability to light up in various colors.
It is just as impressive inside, with its centre-hung giant scoreboard the first thing you’ll notice, as well as the translucent roof. BC Place has two tiers of seating all the way around the interior of the stadium, offering excellent views from all angles, and adding to the stadium's atmosphere during sporting events.
